Road to YPP — type your Studio numbers
580 subs to go
2,650 hours to go
76,00,000 views to go
You need 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 long-form watch hours or 10 million Shorts views. Then YouTube reviews the channel by hand.
The eligibility thresholds
YouTube has two ladders into the Partner Program. Your channel needs one route within each tier.
Full monetization (ads on your videos)
- 1,000 subscribers, and
- either 4,000 valid public watch hours on long-form videos in the last 365 days,
- or 10 million valid public Shorts views in the last 90 days.
Early access (fan funding only — memberships, Super Thanks, Super Chat, Shopping)
- 500 subscribers, and
- 3 public uploads in the last 90 days, and
- either 3,000 valid public watch hours in the last 365 days, or 3 million valid public Shorts views in the last 90 days.
Early access is what Indian creators call "half monetization". It doesn't turn on ads. We explain the differences on the 500 subscribers page.
The word valid matters in every line above. YouTube removes views and hours it considers inauthentic before counting them, and Shorts views from Shorts that use unoriginal content are often excluded. Your Studio "Earn" tab shows the counted number, not the raw analytics number.
Account requirements people forget
- 2-step verification on the Google account that owns the channel. Without it the Apply button doesn't appear.
- Live in an eligible country. India is eligible. The country in Studio → Settings → Channel → Basic info should match where you actually live.
- One AdSense account per person. If you already have AdSense for a blog, link that one — don't create another.
- No active community guideline strike. Copyright strikes also count against the channel's standing.
- Follow the monetization policies, which go further than community guidelines. They cover reused content, repetitive content and advertiser-friendly guidelines.
- Age 18+, or a guardian's AdSense account.
What reviewers actually look at
Once you apply, a human reviewer checks a sample of your channel: the main theme, the most-viewed videos, the newest videos, and how much of the watch time comes from them. They're asking a few questions:
- Is the content original, or does it add enough to borrowed material — commentary, education, editing that changes the meaning?
- Is it repetitive? Hundreds of near-identical videos (same template, different number) fail here.
- Do titles, thumbnails and descriptions match what's in the video?
- Is the traffic genuine?
Compilation channels, "status video" channels using film clips, and text-to-speech channels reading Reddit posts are the most common rejections we hear about from Indian creators. More on these in rejection reasons.
A checklist before you press Apply
| Check | Where to find it |
|---|---|
| Subscribers at or above threshold | Studio → Earn |
| Valid watch hours or Shorts views | Studio → Earn (not Analytics) |
| 2-step verification on | myaccount.google.com → Security |
| Country set to India | Studio → Settings → Channel |
| No active strikes | Studio → Dashboard → Channel violations |
| One AdSense account | adsense.google.com |
| Recent uploads, consistent theme | Your channel page |
If everything is ticked, apply. Review typically takes about a month. During that time keep uploading — reviewers sometimes look at newer videos.
After approval in India
Payment threshold. AdSense pays once your balance reaches $100 (shown in rupees in your account). Payments arrive around the 21st–26th of the month by bank transfer.
Tax forms. Submit the US tax information in AdSense. Indian residents can claim treaty benefits that reduce withholding on US-viewer earnings. Without the form, the default withholding is higher.
Income tax and GST. YouTube income is taxable in India, and depending on turnover you may need GST registration. Requirements change and depend on your situation. Talk to a chartered accountant rather than following a forum post.
Revenue share. For long-form ads, creators get 55% of net ad revenue. For Shorts, revenue is pooled and creators get 45% of their allocated share. Indian views earn lower CPMs than US or UK views, so a lakh Indian views pays far less than a lakh US views. Our money calculator shows realistic ranges.
Where growth services fit, honestly
You can buy subscribers or watch time, and people do. But understand what you're doing: purchased numbers can be filtered out of the "valid" totals, and a reviewer who sees 4,000 hours on two videos with no comments and no returning viewers can reject the channel for inauthentic traffic. Nobody — including us — can promise approval.
What purchased services do well is the part before monetization: making a small channel look less empty so real visitors subscribe, and getting new videos past zero views. Use them for that, and build the YPP numbers on content people actually watch.
Common timeline for an Indian channel
- Month 0–3: first 20–40 uploads, under 200 subscribers. Mostly learning what works.
- Month 3–9: one or two videos find search traffic; subscribers reach 500–1,000.
- Month 6–15: watch hours add up, often from a handful of long, searched videos (tutorials, explainers, recipes).
Some channels move much faster, especially in Shorts. Many take longer. Track your gap with the calculator above; it uses the same formula Studio does.
