Half monetization at 500 subscribers

The lower YPP tier opens memberships, Super Thanks and Shopping — but not ads. It's useful for some channels and pointless for others. Here's how to tell which you are.

Who gets real value from it

Live streamers. Gaming, devotional streams, cricket watch-alongs and astrology lives are where Indian viewers send Super Chats. At 500 subscribers with a loyal live audience, Super Chat can earn more than ads would.

Teachers and coaching channels. Memberships with members-only doubt sessions or notes work well for exam-prep channels — students already pay for coaching.

Product reviewers. YouTube Shopping with affiliate links lets a gadget or beauty channel earn on sales before ads switch on.

Who gets almost nothing: channels without a returning audience. Memberships need people who care enough to pay ₹59 a month. Super Thanks rarely appears on videos with a few hundred views.

Getting from 300 to 500

The 500 line is reachable for most consistent channels in a few months. What tends to help:

  • Three uploads in 90 days is the floor, not the goal. Weekly uploads move faster.
  • One searchable video per week. "How to fill a scholarship form 2026", "Realme 14 camera settings" — videos people type into search keep collecting subscribers for months.
  • Ask clearly once. A spoken "subscribe if you want part 2" at the moment you've delivered value converts better than a reminder at the start.
  • Community posts and polls once you have them; they bring back existing viewers.

If you want a small push across the line, a 100–250 refill-backed subscriber order costs ₹1,349 for 250 today. Do it alongside real activity, not instead of it.

3,000 hours vs 3M Shorts

Most Indian channels find one of the two routes clearly easier:

  • Long-form tutorials, vlogs, explainers — watch hours. 3,000 hours = 1.8 lakh minutes; at a 5-minute average that's 36,000 views across a year.
  • Shorts-first channels — 3 million Shorts views in 90 days is about 33,000 a day.

You only need one. Check both in Studio → Earn.

After you join

  1. Turn on the features you'll actually use. Memberships need perks — a badge alone doesn't sell.
  2. Set up AdSense properly (one account, real legal name, PIN verification). Details on the YPP India page.
  3. Keep building toward 1,000 and 4,000. The switch to ads is automatic when you get there.

Three misunderstandings we hear often

"Half monetization means half the ad money." It doesn't. There are no ads at all in this tier — "half" is just Indian YouTube slang for the lower tier.

"If I join at 500, I'll be reviewed again at 1,000." You're already in the program, so there's no second application. YouTube does keep checking channels for policy problems, though, at every stage.

"Super Thanks will pay for my equipment." On most small channels, Super Thanks brings in a few hundred rupees a month at best. It grows with the audience, not with the feature. Treat early access as a signal that you're on the right path, not a payday.

Frequently asked questions

Does half monetization show ads on my videos?

No. Ads (and ad revenue) only come with the full tier at 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 hours or 10M Shorts views.

What are the exact requirements?

500 subscribers, 3 public uploads in the last 90 days, and either 3,000 valid public watch hours in the last 365 days or 3 million valid public Shorts views in the last 90 days.

Do I need to re-apply at 1,000 subscribers?

No. Once you're in the program, YouTube moves you to ads eligibility when you meet the full thresholds. You'll be notified in Studio and by email.

Is the 500 tier available in India?

Yes. India was one of the countries where the expanded YPP launched.

Can I sell products on YouTube Shopping in this tier?

Yes, if your channel meets Shopping's own eligibility rules (not made for kids, not a music channel, no strikes). Many Indian creators use it with affiliate products.

Is it worth buying 100–200 subscribers to reach 500?

Only if you have real fans who would actually use memberships or Super Thanks. The features earn nothing without an engaged audience.
