Road to YPP — type your Studio numbers
580 subs to go
2,650 hours to go
76,00,000 views to go
You need 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 long-form watch hours or 10 million Shorts views. Then YouTube reviews the channel by hand.
The two numbers, precisely
To join the YouTube Partner Program with ad revenue, a channel needs:
- 1,000 subscribers, and
- 4,000 valid public watch hours on long-form videos in the last 365 days — or 10 million valid public Shorts views in the last 90 days.
Plus the basics: you live in a country where YPP is available (India is), you follow YouTube's monetization policies, you have no active Community Guidelines strike, two-step verification is on for your Google account, and you link an AdSense account. Our full requirements page covers each one.
Why subscribers come easy and hours don't
After Shorts arrived, the typical Indian channel's journey changed. Shorts bring subscribers fast — a few Shorts that do well can add thousands — but Shorts watch time doesn't count toward 4,000 hours. So we constantly see channels like this:
Hindi motivation channel: 6,400 subscribers, 38 lakh Shorts views, 640 eligible watch hours.
That channel isn't close. It needs either 3,360 more long-form hours or 10 million Shorts views inside 90 days — and the 38 lakh views were spread over a year.
What counts as a "valid public" hour
- Public long videos only. Unlisted, private and deleted videos don't count.
- Last 365 days, rolling. Hours from 13 months ago have already dropped off.
- Archived public live streams count. A 3-hour stream that 100 people watched for an hour each adds 100 hours.
- Premieres count once they become regular videos.
- Ads views and invalid traffic may not count. YouTube filters what it considers invalid.
Check your number: Studio → Analytics → Overview → set the range to "Last 365 days" → "Watch time (hours)". Studio's Earn tab also shows your eligibility progress directly.
How long does it take organically?
It depends almost entirely on video length and average view duration. Rough examples from typical Indian channels:
| Channel type | Avg. video | Avg. view duration | Views needed for 4,000 h |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hindi vlog | 10 min | 3 min | 80,000 |
| Coaching lecture | 45 min | 12 min | 20,000 |
| Podcast | 60 min | 9 min | ~26,700 |
| Gaming stream replay | 2 h | 15 min | 16,000 |
| Shorts-heavy channel | — | — | doesn't count |
That's why long-form formats — lectures, podcasts, stream replays — reach 4,000 hours much faster than 8-minute vlogs.
A realistic plan
If you have subscribers but not hours: make longer videos your audience actually wants (full lectures, complete walkthroughs, stream replays), build playlists that autoplay, and use end screens. If you choose to buy watch time for the final stretch, put it on your two or three longest strong videos, and only for the actual gap — see 4000 hours watch time.
If you have hours but not subscribers: ask for the subscription inside the video at the moment you've delivered value, not at the start. Add a channel trailer. A modest subscriber order can close a small gap — keep it proportional to your views.
If you're a Shorts channel: decide which route you're on. Shorts views need 10 million in 90 days, which is a very different target; read Shorts monetization.
After you apply
- Studio → Earn → Apply. Accept the terms, link AdSense.
- Wait for review — usually around a month.
- Reviewers look at your channel's main theme, most-viewed videos, newest videos, most watch time, and video metadata. They're checking for reused content, policy problems and whether the channel is genuinely yours.
- If rejected, you can usually reapply after 30 days, once you've fixed the reason. See why monetization gets rejected.
The plain risk note
Buying subscribers or watch hours is a business decision, not a hack. YouTube may remove views or subscribers it judges inauthentic, it reviews channels manually before approval, and it can remove channels from YPP for inauthentic activity later. If you use purchased services, use them to close a realistic gap on a channel that's already making original content — never as a substitute for that content.
