YouTube's thumbnail requirements
| Requirement | Value |
|---|---|
| Recommended resolution | 1280×720 (minimum width 640) |
| Aspect ratio | 16:9 |
| Maximum file size | 2 MB |
| Formats | JPG, PNG, GIF (non-animated) |
Custom thumbnails need a verified account (phone verification in Studio).
Common problems
- Over 2 MB. Export as JPG at 80–90% quality, or run it through any image compressor.
- Not 16:9. Phone screenshots are usually 9:16 or 19.5:9. YouTube adds black bars or crops them.
- Text too small. Most viewers see thumbnails at about the width of a thumb. Three to five large words is the limit.
Beyond the rules
The best Indian thumbnails we see use one clear face with a readable expression, one bold contrasting colour and very few words. Check the preview at phone size next to competitors before you upload.
