Search vs suggested vs browse — where your views really come from

By YTBoost Team · Updated

Studio → Analytics → Content → Traffic source tells you how viewers found each video. Each source responds to different things.

YouTube search

Viewers typed a query and clicked your video. Search traffic is steady and long-lasting, especially for tutorials and "how to" videos. It responds to clear titles using the words people actually type (often Hinglish), descriptions and chapters. Check "YouTube search terms" in the same report to see exact phrases.

Suggested videos

Your video was recommended next to or after another video. This is usually the biggest source for growing channels. It responds to topics your audience already watches, strong retention, and series that lead from one video to the next.

Browse features

Home feed, subscriptions feed and Watch Later. Browse traffic means YouTube is showing your video to people who didn't search — so thumbnails and titles matter most here. A sudden rise in browse traffic is often the first sign a video is taking off.

Shorts feed

Views from the vertical Shorts feed. Depends almost entirely on whether people watch or swipe in the first seconds.

External

WhatsApp groups, Instagram, Telegram, websites, Google search. Indian channels often get more external traffic than average because videos travel through WhatsApp. It's real, valuable traffic — but it rarely brings likes, as people watching from a shared link often aren't logged in.

What to do with this

  • Mostly search: good foundation. Make more videos on related searches; add series to win suggested traffic.
  • Mostly external: your community shares you — build YouTube-side habits too (end screens, playlists).
  • Little of anything: start with search — it's the most predictable way for a small channel to get found.
